Conventional
cigarettes have always been the bane of health experts the world
over, particularly with regards to the effect that tobacco smoke has
in the lungs. Today though, the rise of the e-cigarette just might
turn the tables on harmful smoking.

E-Cigarettes: A Smart, Safe Choice
Posted on Friday, December 20, 2013 by Unknown
In England, almost 1.6
million adults aged 35 and older required hospital admissions for
smoking-related diseases from 2011 to 2012 according to the Health
and Social Care Information Centre. The alarming figures have caused
many smokers to turn
to e-cigarettes and do away with traditional ones. In fact,
today's majority of e-cigarette smokers are former cigarette smokers.
Cigarette smokers find
it enticing to make the switch because of the benefits that
e-cigarettes offer: From 1980 to 2012, the price of tobacco has
increased by a total of 191%, making cigarettes expensive to use
these days. Meanwhile, a cartridge of e-cigarette, which costs only
around a pound each, is equivalent to 15 to 20 tobaccos worth of
smoking time.
Additionally, studies
have proven that traditional cigarettes are harmful to health.
Cigarette smoking can put people at a high risk of contracting
various conditions like stroke, heart attack, and most especially
lung cancer. Accounts of people feeling much better physically
speaking when they switched from cigarette smoking to electronic
cigarettes have also been reported.
Cigarette odour tends
to cling to anything it comes in contact with, such as clothing,
hair, and any other personal item carried by a traditional smoker,
and non-smokers often avoid being near to smokers because of this.
E-cigarettes are odour-free since it is vapour, not smoke, that is
exhaled. The e liquid is a mixture of nicotine, water and added
flavours, and together with vegetable glycerine or propylene glycol,
it produces the vapour in e-cigarettes.

What You Need To Know About E-Cigarettes
Posted on Monday, November 25, 2013 by Unknown
Compared to traditional
cigarettes, e-cigarettes do not need matches because they are powered
by a rechargeable battery. Anyone smoking this type of cigarette may
seem to smoke a regular cigarette filled with tobacco, however,
e-cigarettes use liquid nicotine for vaporization, which will then be
passed on to the smoker.
It was Herbert Gilbert
who patented a type of smokeless non-tobacco cigarette in 1963.
Despite its commercial failure, the invention is known to be the
earliest kind of e-cigarette that used a heated, flavoured air. The
better known electronic cigarettes were developed by a Chinese
pharmacist named Hon Lik. The inventor was the first to manufacture
and sell e-cigarettes in the Chinese market and eventually,
internationally. Although the idea started in 2003, it wasn't until
2006 that e-cigarettes were introduced in the US and Europe.
According to a study
published by the American Journal of Preventative Medicine in
February 2011, e-cigarettes can be helpful for smokers who would want
to quit smoking. The research adds that smokers who have used
e-cigarettes on the average undergo a six-month smoking abstinence.
In addition, a different study published in August 2011 concludes
that smokers who have switched to e-cigarettes have lessened their
intake of conventional tobacco-based cigarettes.

A Look at the History of E-cigarettes
Posted on Thursday, November 07, 2013 by Unknown
They say an idea is born every minute, but only a
few actually make it to the assembly line. Some new products that do get
launched meet very limited success yet ultimately spawn a series of spin-offs or
product improvements. Such is what happened to the non-tobacco cigarette first patented
by Herbert Gilbert back in 1963. Like today’s electronic cigarettes, Gilbert's
invention was powered by batteries and offered a range of flavors ranging from
root beer to rum.
For some reason, though, Gilbert's original idea
didn't live up to its full potential, and the product was easily forgotten
after a few years. In 2003, the concept was somewhat revived through Chinese pharmacist
Hon Lik’s efforts. Hon Lik's product was first sold in China, where it
instantly clicked with local consumers. Within a short span, the electronic
cigarette found its way onto the international scene and the rest, as they say,
is history.
Unlike Gilbert's original invention, Hon Lik's
device contains nicotine which comes in the form of an e-liquid. This liquid
also contains the chemical propylene glycol. However, the nicotine content is comparatively
small amount compared to that found in traditional cigarettes. E-liquid comes
in a variety of flavors to satisfy anyone’s preferences.

Why E-Cigarettes are Gaining Popularity
Posted on Wednesday, October 23, 2013 by Unknown
E-cigarettes are basically “nicotine
inhalers” that work by electronically burning liquid nicotine, producing a vapour
that the user then inhales. The use of e-cigarettes
is fast gaining popularity around the world for several reasons.
First of all, e-cigarettes are
generally considered cheaper than traditional tobacco cigarettes. A user's
major expense would be the starter kit, and succeeding expenses cover the costs
of e liquid refills. The total estimated cost of using e-cigarettes in a year
is considerably lower than the cost of consuming one pack of traditional
cigarettes a day.
Additionally, e-cigarettes carry
less of the harmful health effects of traditional cigarettes. The e-liquid in
e-cigarettes do not produce tar, which is a by-product of tobacco-based
cigarettes. Tar is known to cause the staining of a smoker's teeth and skin; it
can also lead to certain respiratory diseases. Likewise, tar is present in the
smoke that a traditional cigarette user exhales, which can then be passed on to
those around the smoker. This is commonly known as secondhand smoke, and is
considered to be just as harmful as that inhaled by smokers themselves.
The vapour produced by the burning
of the e-liquid in electronic cigarettes is tar-free, which makes it safer for
persons around a smoker. For this reason, using e-cigarettes is allowed in many
public places where traditional cigarettes are banned, like airports and
restaurants. This is another factor that has contributed to the rising
popularity of e-cigarettes.
