Compared to traditional
cigarettes, e-cigarettes do not need matches because they are powered
by a rechargeable battery. Anyone smoking this type of cigarette may
seem to smoke a regular cigarette filled with tobacco, however,
e-cigarettes use liquid nicotine for vaporization, which will then be
passed on to the smoker.
It was Herbert Gilbert
who patented a type of smokeless non-tobacco cigarette in 1963.
Despite its commercial failure, the invention is known to be the
earliest kind of e-cigarette that used a heated, flavoured air. The
better known electronic cigarettes were developed by a Chinese
pharmacist named Hon Lik. The inventor was the first to manufacture
and sell e-cigarettes in the Chinese market and eventually,
internationally. Although the idea started in 2003, it wasn't until
2006 that e-cigarettes were introduced in the US and Europe.
According to a study
published by the American Journal of Preventative Medicine in
February 2011, e-cigarettes can be helpful for smokers who would want
to quit smoking. The research adds that smokers who have used
e-cigarettes on the average undergo a six-month smoking abstinence.
In addition, a different study published in August 2011 concludes
that smokers who have switched to e-cigarettes have lessened their
intake of conventional tobacco-based cigarettes.
